SECTION I

HANES CEMETERY

United Church Cemetery, Concession 1, lot 37, Williamsburg Twp.Earliest burial recorded was (HA80) in 1842. The last burialwas Herman Hayunga Van Allen in 1956, (HA 72).

INTRODUCTION

The numbers allotted to the stones, were given by the transcribers for purpose of identification. Ruth Williams, of Ottawa, transcribed this cemetery in the early 1970's, and it was copied by Lynne O'Brien of Morrisburg Aug 8, 1973, and by Dorothy Weller of Lachine, Quebec in 1980. Dorothy drew the map. Sept. 23, 1990 Lynne and Mahlon Cook checked the cemetery again, and revised the map.

In 1973 the only access was a farmers path. In 1990 this path has been developed into a paved road - "Coyle Drive" - with houses on both sides. The fence and gate have been removed from the front of the cemetery. The fence on the other 3 sides has been overgrown with grape vines and other weeds. Somebody has been mowing the grass, but it is neglected. Groundhog holes are numerous, and there are also a few larger ones. Many of the stones have either fallen over on their faces, or have been broken.

Transcribers have added Editor's notes from personal knowledge, church records, mainly St Peter's Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, vital statistics from Williamsburg Twp. records, and obituaries. They are listed after the tombstone inscription, but the dates don't always agree.

The following description of the cemetery was taken from the book, "Mariatown then and now", compiled by Phyllis H. Prosser and Gladys + Buster (Clayton S.) Duval in 1987.

"The land, in lot 37, concession 1 of Williamsburg Twp., for the Hanes Burying Ground and road thereto, was given in a deed dated 4th April 1882 by Jacob Hanes to William R.Robertson and Jas. P. Robertson, & in a deed dated 5th April 1885 from the said Robertsons to Ira Van Allen.

In a deed dated 31st January 1903, for the sum of one dollar the Van Allen Family gave to the Trustees of Fairview Cemetery and the Trustees of the Morrisburg Congregation of the Methodist Church. Namely Arthur Brown inspector, George Emmett dental surgeon, Benson S. Wickware contractor, Gilbert Smith gentleman, Irwin Hilliard barrister, Andrew Broder, Member of Parliament Charles Erastus Hickey, physician, all of the said village of Morrisburgh, Alex B. Robertson farmer, Allen Herman Becksted farmer, Henry Robertson farmer, Lucius Flagg gentleman, of the Twp. of Matilda in said County, Zenas Barkley farmer and Alexander Nash farmer, of the Twp.of Williamsburgh in said County, that certain parcel or tract of land known as the Hanes Burying Ground, containing five-twelfths of an acre more or less, together with a right of way over the present lane from said Burying Ground to the said Highway near the front of said lot.

The said Trustees accept the said Burying Ground upon the condition that they shall erect and maintain a suitable fence around the whole of it and in each year cut and keep down the weeds therein, and to the rights and privileges reserved in the deeds.

Captain Richard Duncan sold the farmland where the Hanes Burying Ground is (now) located, first to Samuel Thomas in 1823 then to John William Gardiner, then to John and Rachel Gardiner, then to Jacob Hanes - who gave the land for the Hanes Burying Ground and road thereto on 4th April 1882."

Editor's note: Hon. Richard Duncan received a patent from the Crown 23 June 1796, all 200 acres of lot 37, concession 1. 25 Sept 1822 John Gardiner [heir at law of Richard Duncan] sold 2 acres of west half to Samuel Thomas Jr. + 10 Jan 1823 the east half, 100 acres. 15 Augt 1839 John W. Gardiner + wife + Rachel Gardiner sold east 1/4 north of road to Jacob Haines. In 1866 Isabella Nevins sold 41 acres to Jacob Hanes. In 1882 Jacob Hanes and wife sold to the Robertson's 100 acres of east half + 41 acres of west half for $11,000 + 3 village lots in Mariatown.
